It’s North Dakota’s first West Nile related death this year.
The State Health Department confirms that one man from the eastern part of the state died from the mosquito transmitted virus.
The victim was a man older than 60.
Last year, 23 people in North Dakota tested positive for the virus. Eight were hospitalized and one died.
West Nile virus symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and rash. Many people infected with the virus experience mild or no symptoms. Health Department epidemiologist Laura Cronquist says the elderly and people with other health issues are at greatest risk of becoming severely ill.
