What is the most iconic job in North Dakota?
In other words, what profession do you think of when you think “North Dakota?”
Most people might think of a farmer or agriculture in general.
While that may have been true for most of North Dakota’s history, the state’s economic and industrial base in the 21st century suggests a new image: Extraction worker.
The financial website 24/7 Wall St. did a data survey to find the most iconic job in each state. These are jobs that are more concentrated in a state’s labor force than any other occupation.
To qualify, an occupation had to represent at least 1 job out of every 2,000 statewide.
In North Dakota, thanks to the booming oil and gas industry, an extraction worker is 44 times more concentrated in the state’s labor force than they are among all workers nationwide.
According to the data, miscellaneous extraction workers in North Dakota earn an average of $57,000 a year
