When To Start Thinking About Your Garden

April showers bring May flowers..only that isn’t always the case.

Spring is hear and the weather is getting warmer.
But it may be difficult to determine when you should start your garden..and when you should plant certain seeds.

(Phil Lowe, General Manager) “People get enthused with the weather. They get a nice day and they get out in their yard and think it’s a good time to plant their tomatoes and it’s really too early. It is a good time to get out and clean out your yard and plan what you are going to do.”

For those who may just be getting started on your garden, there are a few tips to get your foot in the door.

(Phil Lowe, General Manager) “My tip will be, number one, soil. If you are going to plant a garden, a lot of times, if you dig up a part of your yard, the contractor put down a couple of inches of black dirt that’s great to grow grass but tough to grow a garden. Maybe you want to make a raised bed or something to make that soil better like adding organic matter, moss, that kind of thing.”
With every garden, you may get a few unexpected nuisances that you need to stay on top of.
(Phil Lowe, General Manager) “Stay on the weeds because weeds still the moisture and fertility. Don’t let the weeds get ahead of you as the Summer goes on and water. We just don’t get enough natural rainfall to grow a very good garden without adding water.”
House plants can bring a colorful change to your home but you need the right pot.
(Delane Chubey, Container Gardener) “It’s knowing your plants and knowing what you are going to put in your pots. So of them do grow slower so a smaller pot is fine. Some of them grow crazy fast so you want to put those in a bigger pot so it’s less transplanting for you.”

Although Lowe recommends it may be too early for tomatoes, he says radishes and lettuce do well in cold temps.

Lowe’s Floral does offer tips and advice to gardeners and florists throughout the year.
