We now know what happened in a fatal crash involving a Williston Police squad car and a 29-year-old woman.
State Highway Patrol says two Williston police department squad cars were traveling south on US Highway 2.
Their emergency lights and sirens were activated.
The lead vehicle, driven by Sergeant Dustin Bertsch proceeded through the intersection at 42nd street West, right next to Williston’s Wal Mart.
During this time the southbound light was red.
At the same time Wendy Newsome of Williston was traveling on 42nd Street West — her light was green.
As she proceeded through the intersection — she struck the police vehicle causing both vehicles to careen.
Officer Bertsch’s squad car ran off the roadway, struck a traffic light and came to rest in the west ditch.
Newsome’s 2013 Hyundai Sonata came to rest on the southbound side of US Hwy 2.
Newsome died as a result of her injuries.
Bertsch and his police service dog were injured.
The crash closed US Hwy 2 for five and a half hours.
The crash is still under investigation and will be forwarded to on to state’s attorneys for prosecutorial review.
