By now you know our mission at KX News: Putting North Dakota First.
That idea is what inspired us to team up with ABC Seamless of Bismarck, to replace the roof on the home of a local veteran.
“It’s kind of like shock and awe.” That’s how John LaCount, Sr. described the moment he learned that the old roof on his home in Mercer would be replaced.
He was one of about 30 local veterans to enter in the Military Appreciation Roof Giveaway at the start of 2019.
“I was trying to save,” LaCount says, “but it seemed like every time I tried to save, something happened, and set me back.”
“What really stood out to us about John and his story is that he’s always gone out of his way to help others, and put others before himself,” explains Grant Barnum with ABC Seamless of Bismarck. “We really felt it was a great opportunity for us to give back to him for all that he’s given to so many, and our country.”
And so on Monday of this week, the crew from ABC Seamless arrived — and the hard work began.
“There’s actually three layers of existing roofing on there, between shingles and shakes,” Barnum says.
“So only 10 square, but 30 square of tearing off, so it took us a little longer,” explains Tyler Schimke, the co-foreman of the project.
LaCount’s new roof is made of steel — so it shouldn’t need any heavy-duty maintenance on the part of the 85-year-old Air Force vet.
The job was completed Friday morning. “The finished product is outstanding,” LaCount says.
He admitted that he was a little camera shy — but his feelings about the renovations still came through loud and clear: “They’ve done a hell of a job. Couldn’t have happened at a better time.”
A much-needed upgrade for a well-deserving North Dakota veteran.
John LaCount, Sr. served in the Air Force all throughout the 1950s.
He said he expects his daughter to live in that home someday — and didn’t want her to have to deal with the burden of a roof replacement.
