AOTW: Sydney Smith

National Sports

Introduced to the game by her grandparents, Sydney Smith has taken off in golf. She started out playing for Century in the 8th grade but moved to St. Mary’s before this season. After winning the conference title, I talked with Sydney about the game and surprisingly, she said when she first started, she wasn’t really into it.

“Every one in my family golfs, going on through the ancestry, always golfed. When I started, I didn’t really like it all but my parents made me stick with it and I’m really happy that I did because I’m successful in it now,”
(Andy Schmitz, SM head coach)
“I didn’t know a whole lot about Sydney besides that we competed against her for the past couple years. Me being at Bismarck high, her at Century. When we were paired with her and I had Katie, I watched a lot of her, talked to her quite a bit. She’s a great girl, great athlete. She’s got a ton of potential,”

The new blood injected into the Saints has certainly helped their standing within the West. Only a junior, Sydney is focused on continuing to play golf competitively.
