Century boys basketball defeated West Fargo Sheyenne 63-56 to win the program’s first state championship since 2011.
The Patriots built a 29-22 halftime lead and did not let it slip from their grasp. Treyton Mattern led the Patriots with 20 points, going 8-13 from the field, and he also corralled seven rebounds. Kade Lynch added 19 points and Josh Sipes totaled 13.
After the game, head coach Darin Mattern praised his team’s ability to rebound from a tough start to the regular season.
“There was a lot of people writing us off,” Mattern said. “We started the year 1-2 in conference play. I think there was a lot of doubt out there, but I think our whole basketball family, the group of 15 [and] the coaching staff believed we had a good chance to be a pretty good basketball team.”
This is Century’s third state championship in boys basketball.
