Boys’ HS Golf: St. Mary’s focused on short game ahead of WDA

The St. Mary’s golf team has had an interesting year. The Saints are usually one of the top teams in the region, but this year has been different.

This season, the Saints highest finish was sixth at the Dickinson Invite, but the scores do not indicate just how close St. Mary’s is to being back in the top echelon of the West.

St. Mary’s is only about 10 shots from being a top four team, so coach Michael Herzog is focusing on short game in practice.

“He makes us work on short game a lot,” Alex Wilson said. “We play nine holes too, but I think short game is really important for us because that’s where the most strokes are gained. It helps your score a lot with short game.”

The next event for St. Mary’s is the West Region Tournament on May 29 at Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson.
