Century baseball wins first Class A state title

National Sports

After holding off Fargo Davies in the semifinals Saturday morning, Century baseball claimed its first state title with a 12-2 win over Red River.

The Patriots quickly jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Connor Hanson then held Red River’s bats in check as the Century offense scored four more runs in the second. Century capped off the five-inning win with three runs in the fifth, all with two outs.

“[There are] A lot of emotions running through me,” shortstop Dawson Weikum said. “A lot of joy, a lot of happiness, and lot of pride for my team. We just played really well these last few days, and I can’t say much more about it. It’s just a great feeling.”

“We’re one of the last teams at Century to get a banner up on the wall, and we’re pretty excited about that,” head coach Kent Schweigert added. “We’ve been looking at that bare spot for quite some time.”

Earlier, Minot baseball battled Fargo Davies in the third place game. The Magicians lost the game 9-6.
