The Bismarck Reps and the Mandan A’s will play for the fourth time this season in the opening round of the Class A Southwest Regional Tournament in Jamestown on July 26.
Mandan beat the Reps two out of three times this year. However their last loss to Mandan was not all bad news, it might have been the turning point in the season, as they reeled off wins in four of the next six games en route to a 14-11-2 record.
The players feel hitting in favorable counts has been the key to success.
“Just work ahead and see if you can hit the early fastball,” Nick Hinsz said. “So you’re not putting yourself in two-strike counts. [That way] you don’t have to guess at his pitches. Try to hit that early fastball.”
A win against Mandan would be their 15th overall victory on the season.
Mandan hopes to win their third game against the Reps. This season their team motto has been Skoden, which loosely translated means “Let’s go then”.
This year, the A’s probably had the weirdest schedule ,because of the renovations of Veterans Memorial Ballpark, they have not had a home game since July 4.
Through it all, though, the A’s never gave up.
“These kids don’t give up,” Birdhorse said. “We get down one inning and figure out a way to compete and play good baseball towards the end of the games. So I would say the most surprising is that we always find a way to compete no matter what happens.”
Mandan and Bismarck will meet for the fourth time tomorrow at 3:30 in Jamestown.
