Class B State: St. John, Bishop Ryan, Hillsboro, Carrington advance to semifinals

Hillsboro-Central Valley, St. John, Bishop Ryan and Carrington all advanced to the Class B state semifinals after a competitive first day.

Three out of the four games were decided by seven points or less. The exception was St. John’s game against Wyndmere-Lidgerwood. The Woodchucks, who were making their first-ever Class B state tournament appearance, took down the Warbirds 62-47.

Bishop Ryan then took on Shiloh Christian in what was a close game to the very end. Shiloh Christian’s Jonas Mitzel had to exit the game at halftime after suffering a ruptured spleen, according to sources. Mitzel’s absence and the Lions’ strong presence down low allowed the Lions to emerge with a 60-53 win.

Beulah and Hillsboro-Central Valley was the definition of a back-and-forth game. Beulah started off on an 8-0 run, which included two three-pointers by Jacob Weigel. The Burros battled back to tie the game 30-30 at halftime. The teams traded buckets throughout the third quarter to stay tied 40-40 entering the final eight minutes.

Landen Reed provided back-to-back threes for the Burros to give the Burros the lead late in the fourth. With less than a minute to go, Hillsboro held a 53-50 lead. After calling a timeout, Beulah tried to free up Derek Ferebee from beyond the arc, but the senior’s potential game-tying shot went hard off the back of the rim. The Burros’ Carson Henningsgard brought down the rebound and was fouled soon afterward. He hit two free throws to ice the game, giving the Burros a 55-50 win.

The final game between Stanley and Carrington featured a Cardinal comeback. Stanley led by as much as 11 points well into the third quarter, but Carrington did not let up. The Cardinals cashed in on several open threes and out-rebounded the Blue Jays down the stretch.

With the game eventually tied at 59 late in the fourth, Carrington’s Trey Rosenau took a rebound and dribbled coast-to-coast before finishing with the go-ahead layup. Wyatt Hanson missed a jumper on the other end, and Carrington went on to win 63-59.
