The University of Mary football team opened the 2017 season with a loss to preseason Northern Sun favorite MSU-Mankato on Aug. 31 at the Community Bowl.
The game got off to a rough start for the Marauders. The offense fumbled on the second play from scrimmage and the ball was recovered by Mankato.
On the ensuing drive on fourth and one from the UMary’s one-yard line, Mankato rushed the ball into the end zone to take a 7-0 lead.
Coach Josh Kotelnicki’s bunch didn’t put any points on the board until the second quarter. Quarterback Colton Farmer scored the first points of UMary’s season on a keeper, but by that time they already trailed 21-0.
The final score was 35-7.
UMary returns to the gridiron on Sept. 9 for a road game against Wayne State College.
