Men’s and Women’s soccer teams at the University of Mary are closing out the regular season trying to earn berth to the postseason.
The Men are currently 6-6-1 with two games left in the regular season, so it’s an outside shot for them to earn bid.
One big hurdle is the men play as independents and are not affiliated with a conference. The Marauders can’t rely on strength of the conference.
Their roster is dominated by freshman, so if they don’t make the postseason they should be ready for next year.
“We have a lot of young guys,” Dan Cook said, “so this is new for them. Forty-five of our minutes this season are played by freshman, so a lot of it just continued improvements.”
The next match for the Men’s team is at Upper Iowa on Oct. 30.
The women have a better shot at qualifying. They are 9-4-2.
Their current position is a noticeable turnaround from last year and coach Sarah Cook credits their defensive play.
“Last year we gave over two goals a game up,” coach Sarah Cook said, “and we scored enough to win all those games. This year we’ve been averaging under a goal per game that we’ve been giving up.”
The next match for the women is Oct. 27 at MSU-Moorhead at 3 p.m.
