National Sports

For around two weeks, University of Mary head baseball coach Joel Barta has been on administrative leave. Today, the university announced Barta has been relieved of his duties.

The school released a statement about Barta’s dismissal.

“Head baseball coach, Joel Barta, has been relieved of his duties effective March 27, 2018.

The University has named assistant coach Kevin Walsh as interim head coach, and he will lead the Marauders through the remainder of the season. Coach Walsh and the other assistant coaches will be assisted by Athletic Director Dale Lennon and other members of athletic administration.

A national search for a new head baseball coach will begin immediately.

No further comments will be made regarding this decision.”

The statement was provided Tom Ackerman, who works with U-Mary media relations and video.

Barta has missed the last eight games while suspended.

Kevin Walsh will take over as the interim coach for the remainder of the season. Walsh joined the staff last season and worked with the pitchers.

The university still has not released any information about why Joel Barta was initially placed on administrative leave after the team returned from their Florida trip.
