College Swimming: Boese not content with 5 school records

National Sports

Alyssa Boese is the most decorated swimmer in UMary’s history. To be far, the program is in it’s second year of existence.

For college, Alyssa Boese was looking for a Division II swimming program that had her intended major.

“My mom is like, ‘Hey, there’s this new program starting up,'” Boese said. “It was the University of Mary.”

The nursing major made her decision on school based on her career path. This happened before Allan McCallum was named as the head coach, but Allan wasn’t disappointed.

“She really started looking at Mary because of the academic reputation the school has, “McCallum said. “She liked the idea of building a program and being able to start establish a great foundation.”

Alyssa says once she met Coach McCallum she was sold on coming out for the team.

“I’m a little awkward,” Boese said. “So, it’s nice to be able to hold a conversation with your coach so you can tell him if anything is wrong, or if you need to lay back on practice because you have a ton of homework.”

Once on campus, Alyssa learned swimming in college was different from Skyview High School in Billings, Mont.

“Lifting has really made me bulk up,” Boese said. “I use to be this puny little kid, and now I’m sore all the time.”

Alyssa says she has added up to 15 pounds of muscle.

“We do power work in the pool too,” Boese said, “that’s almost like lifting, but swimming at the same time.”

And the results are in the record books. Alyssa is a part of five school records. She even broke her own mark in the 50 backstroke at the Dragon Invite.

“That felt really good especially since I wasn’t tapered,” Boese said. “If I can do that now, I can’t wait to see what I do at conference.”

UMary is preparing for the Northern Sun conference meet, which starts Feb. 13 in West Fargo.
