Dickinson State women’s basketball to depend on everyone, including freshmen

National Sports

In her second season as head coach of Dickinson State women’s basketball, Liz Lewis has a 2018 roster that reflects her basketball philosophy. Part of that philosophy counting on everyone to be ready to contribute on the court.

Returners like three-point specialist Riley Helmick are expected to get significant minutes, but Lewis said that even this year’s freshmen class could be depended on heavily.

“We’ve got four freshmen who are going to get a lot of minutes,” Lewis said. “That’s not necessarily the case at every four-year school, but it is here. They’re going to get a lot of minutes and do a lot of good things for us. All four freshman are six feet tall, which is really nice. It’s definitely a change from our roster last year.”

The four freshman are Brooke Janz, Kyley Verploegen, Danielle Wallace and Cayleigh McClenahan. All four have played in at least eight of the first nine games. McClenahan leads the freshmen with 20 minutes a game and eight points scored per game.
