Former NDSU forward Luke Moormann remembers Bison’s first trip to NCAA Tournament

National Sports

NDSU men’s basketball is back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015.

It’s been 10 years since the program’s first-ever appearance when they entered as a 14 seed.

Simle Middle School teacher Luke Moormann was a senior forward on that historic 2009 team. He remembers the moment they saw their name go on the bracket like it was yesterday.

“It was almost like getting ready for a game,” Moormann said. “You’re a little nervous, waiting to see something happen, and then all of a sudden your name pops up there. We all get excited, we get to play Kansas, and then we see we’re going to Minneapolis. To us, that was the coolest part, because we had basically a home game then.”

Around 10,000 fans made the trip to see them play that year in a 10-point loss to then-three seed Kansas.

The 2019 Bison team will play in Dayton, Ohio, tomorrow night at 5:40 p.m. against NC Central.
