Girls HSBB: Little rest for Century basketball players that played volleyball

National Sports

For some of the Century girls basketball players, a day off would be a luxury. Four varsity players went from winning the volleyball state championship on Nov. 18 to basketball practice the following Monday.

On Nov. 18, Century won their third straight Class A volleyball state championship. On Nov. 20 at 6 a.m. Bailee Otterness was at basketball practice.

“It’s a grind,” Otterness said. “You’re tired. You’re sore. You’re definitely more fatigued than other girls because your muscles are still recovering from that long weekend of playing volleyball.”

Bailee was not the only player with the quick turn around. Katelyn Selensky, Megan Anderson and Lauren Ware did too.

“All these sports are hard on our bodies,” Ware said, “but just taking care of ourselves. And just having that mental toughness to come into the gym every morning.”

Volleyball started on Aug. 14 and if the Patriots advance to the basketball state championship on March 10, seven months will pass without these athletes receiving a rest.

The schedule is also makes balancing school work tough.

“It’s hard to catch up for sure,” Otterness said. “Especially, since WDA and State were back to back and you have two days of missing school, but the teachers are super helpful. They are willing to work with you to get it.”

But the physical part is not a tough as the mental.

“Especially since this is such a different game from volleyball,” Ware said. “So just getting into to that basketball mode is hard for us.”

But for them, a lack of sleep can’t compare to the joy of winning it all.

“As long as you’re willing to work hard,” Otterness said. “It’s worth to play a sport you love.”

“Just reaching toward that goal kind of motivates us,” Ware said, “and knowing that it’s not really that bad as long as we put in our best work.”

On Dec. 2, Century plays their first game of the season at home against Mandan.
