Girls HSBB: St. Mary’s ends 20-year state tournament drought

National Sports

The St. Mary’s girls basketball team had an historic season. The Saints qualified for the state tournament for the first time in 20 years.

The Saints were one of the best teams in North Dakota all season long. The girls earned the three seed for tomorrow’s state tournament.

The school has never won a state championship.

Senior Sydney Smith said she knew early on in the state qualifier game that these seniors had realized their goal.

“The first three minutes I knew,” Sydney Smith said. “I knew that we were not going to lose that game no matter what. I knew we had it in us and we showed it on the court.”

“Beating Century was probably our biggest one,” Tonya Dvorak said. “I know as a team we wanted that to be our goal this year.”

On Mar. 8, St. Mary’s will play Grand Forks Red River at 3 p.m.
