HS FBall: New Salem’s Braden Zuroff carrying the load at running back

National Sports

This year, the Holsteins offense has been unstoppable. New Salem-Almont-Glen Ullin is averaging over 56 points per game. A lot of the attention is on quarterback Evan Henke, but senior running back Braden Zuroff is also carrying a big part of the offense.

“We believe run first,” head coach Steve Kleinjan said. “We want to establish that run.”

Senior running back Braden Zuroff has racked up a lot of yards. Most of the time in just for the first three quarters.

“I’ve come out of every game after the third quarter,” Zuroff said. “So playing a full game will be fun.”

Over the summer, Braden went to football camps at North Dakota State and Minnesota State-Mankato.

“It shows what I need to work on and what my weaknesses were and stuff like that,” Zuroff said. “Like my footwork and moving side-to-side.”

The camps seem to have helped as Braden has ripped of several big runs this season.

“His vision of the field is tremendous,” said Kleinjan said. “He just explodes. His feet never stop moving. He’s got some of the quickest feet that I’ve ever seen.”

When you pair New Salem’s outstanding running attack with their prolific passing attack, game planning for the Holsteins is a difficult task for opposing coaches.

“It kind of helps when you have more versatility,” Zuroff said. “It kind of takes the attention of myself and I can kind of get some open runs.”

And while as a team New Salem wants to win the region title and ultimately a state title, they only worry about their opponent for the upcoming week.

“I try to focus more on the weekly standpoint and work game-by-game,” Zuroff said. “If we focus week-by-week on what’s coming up next, we’ll eventually get there.”

Braden and New Salem-Almont-Glen Ullin Holsteins look to win their third straight region title tonight against the Shiloh Christian Skyhawks.
