The Bismarck High Demons opened their 2017 season at the Bowl with a 48-20 win.
The game was a competitive one throughout the first quarter. Fargo Davies opened things up by marching down the field and capping off the drive with a Johnson Jones touchdown run. Bismarck blocked the extra point attempt, but Davies still grabbed a 6-0 lead.
The Demons responded on their first drive in similar fashion. Running back Jalen Sprecher took a carry twenty yards to the house for six, but then Davies blocked Bismarck’s extra point to keep the game tied 6-6.
Davies took their next drive and methodically drove down the field and into the red zone. Then Jones got another carry and ran 10 yards before getting dragged down around the five-yard line.
But while Jones hit the ground, the ball popped out of his hands and spilled toward the goal line. Bismarck pounced on the ball in the end zone and signaled that they had earned a turnover and touchback, while Davies’ bench maintained the ground caused the fumble. After a quick discussion with the line judge, the referees determined Jones had fumbled the ball before his knee touched the ground, giving Bismarck possession.
Bismarck took the momentum shifter and literally ran with it. Sprecher’s legs got the Demons to the one-yard line, and quarterback Will Madler scored on the next play via a quarterback sneak.
The Demons led 13-6 after the first quarter, and they did not look back, winning their opener 48-20.
