HS Gymnastics: Dickinson’s Meghan Ackerman reflects on landing near-perfect vault

National Sports

In high school gymnastics, an individual milestone helped punctuate one of the best meet performances in Dickinson history.

Senior Meghan Ackerman stuck a handspring front vault last Saturday to earn a winning score of 9.75. Only two other Dickinson gymnasts have done the vault, and both were state champions in 2016. Ackerman is currently the only person in the state doing this vault.

She’s trained for this type of vault ever since the seventh grade, but always gave up on making an attempt when the season came around, but she came into this year saying she would not settle for anything less than sticking it.

“There were days where I just wanted to give up so badly,” Ackerman said, “but just landing that–I said earlier it just dropped all my worries. It was the biggest relief ever. I seriously have watched that video so many times, and just the reaction–it makes me so happy. I think after I said, ‘Okay, I just have to do exactly that at practice and every meet for the rest of the year and we’ll be golden.”

The Midgets are at the Minot Invite this Friday at 5 p.m.
