HS Hockey: Petrie Bismarck’s gem from up North

National Sports

The Bismarck High boys hockey team hit the jackpot when Caleb Petrie walked into their lives. The junior moved down from Canada and is now looking to take the Demons to their first state title since 2014.

A year and a half ago, Caleb Petrie moved with his family to Bismarck from Simcoe, Ontario.

“Oh I love Bismarck,” Petrie said. “I love it here. You couldn’t ask for anything better.”

A friendship between old teammates landed the junior at Bismarck High. Bismarck High Coach Mike Peluso played with Ryan VandenBussche. And VandenBussche trained Caleb.

“[Ryan VandenBussche] told us flat-out, ‘[Caleb] works extremely hard and sometimes you have to slow him down,'” Peluso said.

The recent transfer was a key cog as the Demons fell short in their second straight trip to the state championship.

“We’re going to go back there this year,” Petrie said. “It was so surreal being in front of all those people. Where I’m from you don’t get anything like that.”

As the Demons try to make another run, the coaches decided to move Caleb from left wing to center, which is the forward’s natural position.

“Center kind of moves around a lot more and has a lot more support,” Petrie said. “Wing kind of just covers the guy and is more of an area guy.”

And while he readjust to his old position, the coach’s also placed their complete trust in Caleb by naming him captain.

“It’s really an honor,” Petrie said, “especially being a junior and only being here for one season. It’s really something special. I’ve got two great assistants behind me helping me lead the way.”

And like any good leader, he’s more concerned with the team than his own success.

“We have the most guys coming back of any team,” Petrie said. “Having some many guys play in the state title, they know what it takes to be there.”

Bismarck is currently 2-0. The Demons look to remain undefeated when they travel to Detroit Lakes on Saturday.
