As Dickinson softball looks to get back to the Class A state championship game, they will rely on youth in the circle.
Freshman Mataya Mortensen played varsity last year as an eighth grader, but this year she’ll slide into the No. 1 pitcher spot with Amber Sickler graduating.
Mortensen ran into some tough WDA offenses to start the year, but after a 2-5 start, the Midgets have won five in a row, and all five have been shutouts.
“I think last year’s experience made me a lot more confident on the mound, knowing my defense and knowing that they have my back,” Mortensen said.
“She knows that she has a lot more on her shoulders this year,” head coach Amanda Mickey said. “I think she’s ready for the task of being our number one pitcher. I shouldn’t say think. I know she has it.”
Next, Dickinson travels to Mandan on Tuesday afternoon.
