HS Softball: Gronberg’s emergence sparked Bismarck High

National Sports

The Bismarck High softball team had another successful season. However, many thought they would rebuild after losing a strong senior class, but the emergence of an eighth grader helped the Demons make it back to the state tournament.

“Age doesn’t really matter to me,” Gronberg said.

A strong statement from the only middle schooler on Bismarck High’s varsity softball team.

“The teammates like to joke around about how you I am. I’m not older enough to get my [driver’s] permit,” Gronberg said, “and how I can’t do all this stuff. I have to ask them to drive me around, but we end up getting through it together.”

Logan says she never expected to play such a pivotal role this season.

“I thought I would just be back up pitcher and third [basemen] and just hitting when I needed to be,” Gronberg said.

This young pitcher wowed the WDA. Logan won seven games this season, including three straight wins to capture the West Region tournament crown.

“I knew my team would help me on defense,” Gronberg said. “If I could just put the ball in play, I was so excited.”

At the plate, she stepped into the middle of the order and hit .594 with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs.

And while her performance surprised opponents, her teammates knew since last season.

“She did really good last year as a seventh grader,” shortstop Lakyn Storks said. “I’m not surprised be here. She just keeps doing what she does best.”

Logan says the support from teammates and coaches made the transition easier.

“We love each other as teammates,” Gronberg said. “We’re always friends to each other. We treat each other just like sisters.”

Bismarck High will try for their third straight WDA tournament championship next season.
