HS Tennis: Mason Pitcher’s influence had huge impact on younger brother

National Sports

In high school tennis, at Century the Pitcher brothers are both on the varsity roster. But if not for a push from older brother Mason, younger brother Jared might be playing a different sport.

When Jared Pitcher was five or six, he played tennis for a year then put down his racquet.

“I played baseball and soccer,” Jared said.

But as Jared saw his older brother, Mason, and older sister, Katie, playing tennis, he decided to give the sport another shot.

“I wouldn’t take full credit,” Mason said.

Now Jared is a seventh grader in the varsity lineup.

“[Jared’s] put in a ton of time and has a lot of skills already at his age.,” head coach Dan Keith said. “The sky’s the limit for him moving forward.”

But Mason does not takes things easy on his younger brother.

“I’m lucky if I get a game sometimes on him,” Jared said. “It’s good to hit around with him though.”

“Playing with Jared is always fun,” Mason said. “So to play doubles is going to be fun. We have a nice bond or chemistry together.”

But if you compare career resumes, Jared already has a slight advantage.

“When I was in seventh grade, I was only the No. 8,” Mason said. “It surprises me a tiny bit. He’s doing better than me already.”

Jared will play No. 5 singles and he is not afraid of the competition.

“I beat this senior from Williston,” Jared said. “and I beat this seventh grader from BHS.”

But Jared is not the only player with high expectations, Coach Dan Keith expects a lot from Mason, his No. 1 player.

“He had a great finish to doubles last year winning the WDA and picking up a couple of wins at State,” Keith said.

This season, Mason is expected to compete for a singles title.

The Pitcher brothers and Century are back in action tomorrow. The Patriots host Jamestown in WDA action.
