HS Tennis: Schulte an unlikely hero for Century

National Sports

The Century tennis team made an improbable run to the state tournament this year, and the run started thanks to a gem hiding in JV.

“I wasn’t going to be doing anything this fall,” said freshman Colton Schulte. “My dad said, ‘Why not try out for tennis and see how it goes?’ So that’s what I did.”

Schulte didn’t have even own a racquet.

“My sister used to play,” Schulte said. “So, I just used her racquet and that’s what I’ve been using.”

Schulte’s primary sport is hockey, but he picked up tennis pretty quickly and impressed his coach Dan Keith.

“We had a guy in the bowels of JV for us that was working hard for us,” Keith said.

Schulte started the year as the No. 15 rated player, but a couple of weeks before the WDA regionals, Coach Keith decided to move him to varsity.

“I just had a feeling that this guy in clutch moments, even though he had little to no experience, could come through if we asked him to,” Keith said.

The decision paid off. The freshman played doubles, and he didn’t lose a team doubles match until the state playoffs.

“Not since I moved up to varsity and started playing with Bryce [Everson],” said Schulte.

Schulte said he’s coming back next year, and maybe he’ll have his own racquet.

“I think that I’ll stick with it,” Schulte said. “I really liked the sport and I’m really glad I played this year.”

Century made the state tournament this year for the first time since 2014.
