HS VBall: Century poised for the third straight state title

National Sports

For the fourth straight year, the Century volleyball team is the No. 1 seed for the state tournament. But this year, may be Jamie Zastoupil’s best work after replacing eight seniors. I spent time with a team that had to adjust quickly to high expectations.

For the fourth straight year, the Century Patriots claimed the WDA title.

“We’ve fought together,” senior Megan Anderson. “We’ve grown together and we’ve known each other since we’ve been little. It means the world to us to have known each other since we were in elementary school.”

However, this season many of the girls played their first varsity season. So early on, the team had to work out a few kinks.

“Our defense and just having lack of experience,” senior Katelyn Selensky said, “but once we started blocking better and learning to read each other we really picked up our game.”

The Patriots will arrive in Fargo with a 33-8 record overall and a 17-1 in the WDA.

“We’ve had a lot of success,” Anderson said. “We set little goals and try to accomplish them as much as we can. Slowly but surely, we worked as a team to try to figure everything out together.”

These Patriots are a different team than the two-time defending state champions, and the 2017 version has a new motto for the big tournament.

“Retentless and grit,” said Anderson. “Communication is a strong point for us. As long as we communicate and work as a team and have a lot of relentless in our practices, we know that we can pull out and through the games.”

The girls worked through the struggles of coming together as a new team and are now poised to win the school’s third straight state championship and 13th overall.

“It would be awesome,” Selensky said. “We’ve come so far this season. We’ve worked so hard for it. I think we all want it really bad.”

Their quest for lucky number 13 starts Thursday when Patriots take on Devils Lake at 5 p.m.
