HS Volleyball: Fitterers not related, bonded through volleyball

Sports

The Century volleyball roster has the names Julia Fitterer and Hattie Fitterer. Both are sophomores with the same last name, so I thought they were twins, well it turns out they they are not related, but they are bonded through volleyball.

“We are not related,” Hattie said. “Nope.”

“I usually kind of just laugh a little bit,” Julia said.

While Julia and Hattie are not kin, they have known each other for a long time.

“Played together all throughout middle school,” Julia said. “We’ve played on traveling teams together.”

Both performed so well that Century volleyball coach Jamie Zastoupil put them on the varsity roster.

“I kind of had an estimate,” Hattie said. “It was kind of a surprise.”

“Just getting that varsity experience opens your eyes up,” Julia said.

Being sophomores on varsity puts them in elite territory. The last sophomore to make the varsity was Lauren Ware.

“All the eyes on me,” Hattie said. “Having to go up to the ability and having to perform as best as I can.”

Julia actually rose through the ranks last year and played in last season’s state title match win against Jamestown.

“Just a whole new level and game,” Julia said. “How girls can play.”

Hattie broke through this season after playing with on the sophomore team as a freshman.

“When you’re in that varsity gym,” Hattie said. “It’s way more competitive. It’s faced-paced and way more communication.”

The girls are in very important positions. Both spend a lot of time at right outside hitter.

“It can’t be a perfect set every time,” Hattie said, “but you have to adjust to that and be able to find the holes in the other court.”

As a program, Century normally has seniors on the outside.

“It’s surprising that we have sophomores doing that,” Century head coach Jamie Zastoupil said. “We can find those areas with them, but we have some smart sophomores.”

And these sophomores rose to the occasion.

“We always push to make each other better because we play the same position,” Julia said, “but at the end of the day, we are teammates and we all want the same goal.”

On Tuesday, the non-related Fitterers and Century travel to Bismarck High for a match.
