Inside the Den: Next two games crucial for Bobcats

National Sports

The Bismarck Bobcats have had a December they do not want to remember. Bismarck started out the month tied for first place, but just two weeks later the Bobcats are in third.

The Bismarck Bobcats have really been in the holiday spirit this year. As Bismarck has given away three of their last four contests.

“A couple of streaks of very good,” head coach Layne Sedvie said.”And a couple of streaks of just inconsistent hockey. I think that’s a big reason why we have struggled a little bit as of late.”

Bismarck sits four points out of first place and tied for third with the Brookings Blizzard, which is the team Bismarck faces this week.

“Going into the break we want to be up there in the standings,” defenseman Tanner Vesico said. “Right now, we are tied with Brookings. If we could get out of there with four points that would be huge.”

Bismarck has been hurt on the power play. The Bobcats have experienced several five-minute major penalties, which put the team at a disadvantage.

“We gave up four goals on the penalty kill because we had a five-minute major,” Vescio said. “It kind of hurt us, but there wasn’t a whole lot that we could do.”

The next two games are important because of how close the Central Division standings are as we approach the midway point of the year.

“If we can win these two,” Jared Resseguie said, “we’ll start off on a good note for the three games against Minot. Wins are huge at this point. Our division is so tight.”

Two wins could vault them into first place. Two losses could drop them into last place.

“We’re four points out of first,” Sedvie said, “and three points of out sixth place. All these games moving forward are interdivisional and you can make up so much ground or you can lose a lot of ground.”

The Bobcats travel to Brookings for two games this weekend.
