Legion Ball: Weikum brothers bonded through love of baseball

National Sports

During the most recent high school baseball season, brothers Connor and Dawson Weikum played together for the first time. and their love for the game created a lasting bond and some colorful moments growing up.

This spring, Dawson and Connor helped Century win the school’s first baseball state title in school history.

“Have some one to pick on all the time,” Dawson said. “He would also give it right back. It was always kind of like a dual.”

“It’s always fun to play with my brother,” Connor said. “He’s a good role model and he can always teach me a lot of things that I don’t know.”

After an historic season together at Century, this summer, Dawson is on the Bismarck Governors. While Connor is on the Bismarck Reps, but Dason wishes he had another season playing with Connor.

“It’s pretty cool playing with your brother by your side,” Dawson. “There’s no really no better teammate than your brother.”

While their time on the same team was short-lived, they are accustomed to playing on separate teams. Especially growing up in a game called blitzball.

“We’re out there in the front yard,” Dawson said. “Probably the first or second swing of the day and right of the face.”

While that was an unfortunate incident for Connor, the boys often practiced baseball together.

“I feel like I always pushed him to be better than what he could be or what he is,” Dawson said.

“We always compete to make each other better, Connor said, “and to make each other better.”

This summer is special as it is the last time Dawson will be around the house every day before leaving to play college ball at Jamestown.

“Most thing that I’ll miss about him,” Connor said, “is him just being there, helping me out through just everything.”

Dawson and the Governors are at tournament in Minot.

Connor and the Reps have a date with Washburn today.
