This Sunday, there will be a Basketball Charity Benefit in St. Mary’s boys’ basketball coach Brent Dekok’s honor. Brent recently received the news that his cancer returned.
When the news got around, Legacy head coach boys basketball Jason Horner spearheaded an initiative to help Brent with some of the cost associated with cancer treatments that insurance does not cover. He said when Brent heard the news he was overwhelmed.
“He just appreciative,” organizer Jason Horner said. “Not just the financial support, but the rallying around of what he’s trying to do. This is not easy. To do it once was hard. Then to have to go through it again during basketball season both times which is already draining and taxing, but to have to do it when you have three days of chemotherapy and then you have to go coach a game that day after you get off the drip. You have to go out to Dickinson and coach a game, which he did, it’s just unbelievable.”
The benefit includes a three-point contest, slam dunk competition and skill challenge.
The event will be this Sunday at Legacy High School at 5 p.m.
