It’s not a big surprise that the Bismarck High football team is in the state championship.

As we continue our coverage of how local area teams advanced to the Dakota Bowl, we look at the Demons.

This year has looked easy for Bismarck High. They have beaten every opponent by at least 14 points.

“It’s a process that’s not easy,” head coach Mark Gibson said. “A lot of people think it’s easy.”

While the offense gets all the glory, Bismarck High’s defense has really been the hero. The Demons posted three shutouts and held three other opponents under 10 points.

“Defensive line and our secondary — skills kids wise — I thought would be our strength,” Gibson said. “I think those two have certainly shown through as the season progressed.”

Bismarck takes on Century today — a team they earlier defeated by two touchdowns.

“We actually have score from 2014 up on the board where [this season was similar to that season],” senior Canyon Stonecipher said. “They lost in the semifinals. We put that up to show that no one is invincible.”

In 2016, Century handed Bismarck High a loss in the state title game — a memory Bismarck High quarterback Will Madler has not forgotten about.

“I guess you could say use it as motivation,” Madler said, “but that was two years ago. It’s a new team for us and new team for them. We’re going to have to play a good game in order to win.”

Six seasons have gone by since the Demons claimed a title and they want that streak to end on tonight.

Growing up you hear of all the state championships — I probably went to a few of them,” Madler said. “It was a great experience. I kind of want to bring that back.”

The No. 1 Demons will face Century for the Class AAA Championship at 6:40 p.m.
