The Legacy of Number 12

St. Mary’s High School retired their first jersey number in school history.
Tony Wald was inducted to the Hall of Fame earlier this fall, and made the trip back to Bismarck to see his old number, the number 12, forever honoring his legacy.

(Gerald Vetter, School President) “A prolific scorer. Probably the best shooter we’ve ever had come through this school.”
Athletes come and go, but their legacy is never forgotten
(Gerald Vetter, School President) “He’s St. Mary’s Central High Schools only All-American.”
Tony Wald graduated from St. Mary’s in 1964, but the school is honoring his accomplishments but retiring his jersey number: the #12.

(Tony Wald, St. Mary’s Class of 1964) “It’s an incredible honor when you think that the school has been in existence for 96 years, and they’ve never retired any other jersey. It’s pretty humbling – Pretty special.”
His family stood by his side while Wald was honored before the boys basketball game.
(Tony Wald, St. Mary’s Class of 1964) “We’re enjoying the moment.”
The current Saints players wore shooting shoots with the #12 to honor Tony. Before they were even born, the #12 was a sought after number for the Saints.
(Gerald Vetter, School President) “The students who were younger than him used to play in the back yard and everyone wanted to be Tony Wald, and they pretended they were Tony Wald, and when they would finally get to high school, a lot of them wanted to wear number 12.”
(Tony Wald, St. Mary’s Class of 1964) “We believed in being role models back in my era, so it’s gratifying that someone would want to emulate me.”
His name might not have as much meaning to the younger generation, but now the legacy of Tony Wald will be remembered for years to come.
(Gerald Vetter, School President) “From here on in, no one will wear number 12. That number belongs to Tony and it belongs to the legacy of St. Mary’s High School.”

Wald is also part of the Dickinson State Hall of Fame and went on to become a successful business man, and says that the discipline, unselfishness, and team culture he learned at St. Mary’s shaped him into the man he is today.
