U-Mary women’s cross country returns home after runner-up finish at nationals

A welcoming party greeted the U-Mary women’s cross country team as they returned to Bismarck Sunday after their runner-up finish at the NCAA DII Championships in Pittsburgh.

Despite a delayed flight, the Marauders were all smiles as they brought in their second place trophy from the D2 Championships.

Emily Roberts led the way Saturday with a third place finish overall. She says the conditions Saturday were tough, but she couldn’t have been more proud of the team’s effort.

“It was a crazy mess, but I think that’s the definition of cross country,” Roberts said. “It’s kind of exciting to toe the line and be like, ‘Okay, this is going to be a real challenge.'”

“We put together our best team performance, and that’s exactly what we needed,” head coach Dennis Newell said. “We talked about that. Everyone was going to have to have their best race.”

This is the second straight year the women’s team took second. Five Marauders earned All-American status with their efforts this weekend.
