Women’s College Basketball: U-Mary loses in final seconds of NSIC Opening Round

National Sports

The University of Mary women’s basketball team lost a heart breaker in the opening round of the Northern Sun Conference tournament on Feb. 27 on the campus of U-Mary.

U-Mary led for much of the second half. However, in the final stretch of the game, they hit a cold spell.

With 15.6 seconds left, Cassie Askvig hit a layup to give the Marauders a 52-51 lead. On the next possession, Wayne State buried a 3-pointer to give the visitors the lead, 54-52. U-Mary was unable to execute a full-length court play with 1.3 seconds left.

U-Mary lost, 54-52.

“A play called homerun that we run in that scenario,” head coach Rick Neumann said. “Give Wayne State credit. They decided to stand way back there and make us just throw it. It is what it is. We tried to execute a play, but it just didn’t work at the end. It’s not a lot of time.”

The men also lost. They were at Wayne State, 84-62.
