Weather Whys: What causes the wind?

Weather Whys

With the wind back in the forecast today, is anyone surprised? Wind seems to be a regular here in North Dakota. But why exactly are we windy here in North Dakota?

As a whole, the earth is trying to constantly stabilize itself. That’s all weather is… Mother Natures moving things around to neutralize… and we know it never will settle.

The constant heating and cooling of the Earth creates pressure systems… the high and the low pressure you so often hear about. And it’s the differences in the pressure that cause the wind. Air will move from high pressure to low pressure always.

The closer the high and low pressure systems are, the more dramatic the change in pressure, which means the windier we will be.

There are a few other things that influence the wind direction. Friction from mountains, hills, buildings, storms and even trees can change the wind direction. We don’t have many of these barriers so we get windy easily.  Many of the Upper Plains states and the Canadian Prairies are in the same boat as us… we all just get downright windy on a regular basis.
